Angela Forss Schmit is a partner at Koukol Johnson Schmit & Milone, LLC. Her practice focuses on helping businesses launch, grow and protect their businesses with confidence. She also helps families grow and protect their legacy through adoption and estate planning.
As a business attorney and a wholehearted entrepreneur, Angela serves as a trusted advisor to business owners and is the go-to attorney for coaches, consultants and creative entrepreneurs. Angela is a firm believer that clear boundaries and agreements are the best legal protection for any business. Angela helps businesses establish a strong legal foundation, form the proper business entity, legally launch online, engage clients with legal-ease, and scale their team with clear expectations. Her mission is to hold business owners in integrity by ensuring that their legal policies and agreements align with their business values and best practices – by doing so, she helps her clients protect their time, money and mastery.
Angela is an experienced labor and employment attorney who counsels and represents public and private sector employers and human resource professionals navigating complex legal issues, including: employment policies and handbooks; collective bargaining; contract negotiation; performance management, personnel investigations, discipline and discharge; compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations; and representation in employment-related claims, such as charges of discrimination and retaliation, wage and hour violations, and prohibited practices litigation. Angela also conducts training for clients on a broad range of workplace topics to help industry leaders develop best practices.
As an experienced adoption attorney, Angela counsels and represents individuals and families in adoption matters, including kinship and stepparent adoptions. Angela is committed to helping families in transition understand their legal rights and obligations related to: paternity/maternity, petitions for adoption, consent to adoption and relinquishment of parental rights, and other unique issues facing families. Angela also serves as court-appointed Guardian ad Litem in adoption and guardianship matters.
Angela also helps individuals finalize their wishes and provide peace of mind for the families by designing and drafting wills, powers of attorneys, and other estate planning documents. Having a younger sister with Downs syndrome, Angela is also a passionate advocate for families with special needs and helps prepare special needs trusts.
Angela has attained a diverse legal education and professional experiences. During law school, Angela interned for the Honorable Angela R. Arkin, Douglas County District Court Judge (Colorado). Following law school, she completed a prestigious judicial fellowship in the Arapahoe County District Court (Colorado) for the Honorable F. Stephen Collins and the Honorable Robert H. Russell, II. Angela began practicing law at a reputable family law firm in Denver, Colorado, specializing in high-end financial cases involving businesses, as well as complex constitutional law issues. Upon moving to Omaha, Nebraska, Angela joined a prominent general practice law firm in Sarpy County, Nebraska, where she served as a labor and employment counsel for the City of Bellevue, the third largest city in the State of Nebraska; Angela has also represented individuals and employers in a variety of labor relations and employment law matters, family law cases and adoptions, business transactions and disputes, real estate and landlord/tenant matters. Angela embarked on an entrepreneurial journey as a solo practitioner when she founded Schmit Law Firm, LLC in 2017. In 2022, Schmit Law Firm merged with Koukol & Johnson to form Koukol, Johnson Schmit & Milone. She credits her time running her own law firm as one of the greatest personal and professional development experiences of her lifetime.
Angela enjoys teaching budding entrepreneurs as an adjunct instructor at Metro Community College, where she has taught Business Law in the Paralegal Studies program and a variety of courses in the Event and Wedding Planning Certificate program.
Outside of the practice of law, Angela enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters, attending retreats, horseback riding, wine, and traveling.
