ATTORNEY | PARTNER
Angela Forss Schmit is a partner at Koukol Johnson Schmit & Milone, LLC, where she guides clients through life’s complex transitions with clarity, composure, and foresight. Whether expanding a family through adoption, navigating a divorce with division of assets, forming an LLC for a new business venture, or making the difficult decision to terminate an employee, Angela understands that legal decisions rarely exist in isolation. Each situation involves layered relationships, heightened emotions, power dynamics, and long-term consequences. She helps clients navigate both legal and relational complexities, establishing clear expectations and enforceable boundaries that protect their interests, reduce conflict, and provide a confident path forward.
In family law, Angela represents clients facing deeply personal and emotionally charged decisions. Divorce, custody disputes, and post-decree conflicts often involve entrenched relationship patterns and communication challenges. Angela helps clients slow down, gain perspective, and make choices that align with both their legal interests and long-term well-being. Trained in family law mediation, she brings insight and empathy to help families resolve disputes and craft parenting plans outside the courtroom. She is particularly skilled at helping clients define boundaries around parenting time, decision-making, and communication, fostering stability for children and families. Angela is also an experienced litigator, including in complex, high-asset dissolution matters. She attributes her confidence and ease in the courtroom to her time as a law fellow serving several family law judges.
Adoption is one of the most meaningful areas of Angela’s work. She guides families through private, stepparent, and kinship adoptions, both domestic and foreign, helping them navigate the process with care, precision, and respect. She understands that adoption involves layered relationships, heightened emotions, and an unwavering focus on the child’s best interests. Angela’s guidance helps families meet legal requirements while honoring the trust and responsibility inherent in building a family through adoption.
Angela’s business and employment law practice is united by the same focus on relationships and boundaries. She supports entrepreneurs and small business owners with formation, contracts, governance, and ongoing legal strategy, helping define roles, set expectations, and protect vital assets, time, and trust. In employment matters, she represents both employees and employers, navigating workplace transitions, disputes, and structural changes. Angela helps clients understand their rights, assess options, and establish thoughtful boundaries that allow them to move forward with confidence and clarity.
Across all practice areas, Angela helps clients move through separation, transition, and change with integrity. Whether restructuring a marriage, ending an employment relationship, or defining a business partnership, her goal is consistent: to provide clarity, reduce conflict, and guide clients with clarity, composure, and foresight.
Angela’s professional journey reflects both depth and breadth of experience. During law school, Angela interned for the Honorable Angela R. Arkin, Douglas County District Court Judge (Colorado). Following law school, she completed a prestigious judicial fellowship in the Arapahoe County District Court (Colorado) for the Honorable F. Stephen Collins and the Honorable Robert H. Russell, II. Angela began her career at a family law firm in Denver, Colorado, concentrating on high-end financial and complex constitutional law cases. Upon moving to Omaha, Nebraska, Angela joined a general practice law firm in Sarpy County, Nebraska, where she served as a labor and employment counsel for the City of Bellevue, the third largest city in the State of Nebraska; Angela has also represented individuals and organizations in a variety of employment law matters, family law cases and adoptions, business transactions and disputes, real estate and landlord/tenant matters. She later founded and ran her own firm, gaining entrepreneurial insight that informs her work with business clients. In 2022, she merged her practice into Koukol Johnson Schmit & Milone, where she continues to blend litigation skills, mediation training, and business acumen to serve clients as their lifelong legal partner.
Clients describe Angela as calm, perceptive, and deeply attentive. She makes complex legal concepts understandable without oversimplifying the stakes, listens carefully, asks thoughtful questions, and helps clients separate urgency from importance, emotion from strategy. Her approach allows clients to feel supported without being rushed and empowered without being overwhelmed.
Angela approaches each client relationship as a partnership, helping build structures, agreements, and boundaries that serve clients well long after the immediate matter concludes.
Outside of her legal work, Angela treasures time with her three daughters, attending school events, dance competitions, and co-leading a Girl Scout troop. Having a younger sister with Down syndrome, she is also a passionate advocate for children with special needs and their families. Angela enjoys reading personal and professional development books, attending retreats, horseback riding, traveling, and sharing wine and conversation with friends and family.
